History of Byron Center
Byron Center was founded in 1836 by Nathan Boynton and his brothers, William and Jeremiah, settlers from New York. The area was heavily wooded and once cleared, it evolved into a productive farming center featuring fruit orchards and vegetable farms.
Byron Center has gone from no roads in 1836 to being located next to two main expressways connecting Byron Center to other activities and people outside our community. Shopping has changed significantly in Byron Center too. We’ve gone from a general store to having Tanger Outlet mall in our community. In addition, the people of Byron Center appreciate the local farmers market from July through October.
When we think of Byron Center, we think of community, family, relationships, support, and love. The people that live in the Byron Center area are not just residents, rather we are a family united in belonging to a community, taking pride in our schools, and caring for others. All of which has a spiritual web that keeps us focused and united on gratitude for each other and our community.
Byron Days Festival
Byron Days Festival (and the parade) is one of the longest-running family festivals in the state. The festival has built momentum for 85 years due to signature events:
Festival Parade-The parade today is very similar to the parade 80 years ago. The difference today is we have more students walking in the school marching band and different candy is thrown into the crowds.
Fireworks-The Saturday night fireworks presentation has become a favorite in the community. This year, the fireworks will be at Bicentennial Park where the majority of the Festival will happen.
Over the years, there have been a variety of events, such as a Ping Pong tournament. The tournament draws all ages and all skill levels to ensure a fun and competitive time. Consider registering for the activity at this year’s Festival.
The craft show is a favorite activity every year! The Festival draws all sorts of crafters…from hand-crafted woodworking to home-made jewelry; the craft show has something for everyone. Join us this year to support home-grown small businesses.
